Lovamahapaya: A Glimpse into the Ancient Past of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka This photograph transports us back in time to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, and the majestic Lovamahapaya, also known as the Brazen Palace or Lohaprasadaya. Situated between the Ruvanveliseya and Sri Mahabodiya temples, Lovamahapaya is an architectural marvel of the Lankan Empire, dating back to the 130s BC. The name Lovamahapaya derives from the bronze tiles that once covered its impressive roof. The building's intricate design is further accentuated by its towering supports, which are believed to have been made of brick and plaster. The Lovamahapaya served as a multi-purpose structure, housing the royal council, monastery, and even a museum. Unfortunately, the Lovamahapaya was completely destroyed during the reign of King Saddha Tissa (137 BC to 119 BC), leaving only the magnificent supports as a testament to its former grandeur. Despite its ruins, the Lovamahapaya continues to captivate visitors with its historical significance and cultural importance in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a unique perspective of the Lovamahapaya, allowing us to imagine the splendor and grandeur of this ancient palace that once stood proudly in the heart of the Lankan Empire.
