EDITORS COMMENTS
Louis VI Le Gros, also known as Louis the Fat (1081-1137), was a significant historical figure in French and European history as the King of France during the early Middle Ages. This evocative image captures the regal presence of Louis VI, showcasing his robust build and commanding demeanor. Born in 1081, Louis VI succeeded his father, Philip I, as King of France in 1108. His reign was marked by internal struggles and external threats. Despite his weight, which was a source of ridicule for some, Louis VI was a capable and determined ruler. He worked to strengthen the French monarchy, asserting his authority over the powerful feudal lords and expanding the royal domain. Louis VI's reign also saw significant military campaigns. He led expeditions against the Normans, who had invaded northern France, and against the Count of Flanders, who had rebelled against his rule. These campaigns helped to secure the borders of the French kingdom and establish Louis VI's reputation as a strong and effective military leader. Despite his military successes, Louis VI faced challenges from within his own court. His relationship with his eldest son, Louis the Fat, was particularly fraught. Louis the Fat, who was also known for his obesity, rebelled against his father and was eventually exiled from France. Louis VI's other sons, however, remained loyal to him, and he was able to maintain his grip on the throne until his death in 1137. This photograph print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the Middle Ages and the reign of a complex and intriguing monarch. Louis VI Le Gros may have been known as the Fat, but this image reminds us of the power and authority that he wielded as King of France.
