EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing lithograph captures the historic moment when Louis-Philippe, the last King of France, arrived in Dover, England in October 1849, following his forced abdication and subsequent exile. The image, created anonymously in 1850, depicts Louis-Philippe in disguise, wearing a simple coat, hat, and glasses, as he stepped off a boat and onto English soil. Louis-Philippe had ruled France as a constitutional monarch since 1830, but his reign came to an end when the Second French Revolution broke out in 1848. Faced with mounting unrest and the threat of a popular uprising, Louis-Philippe abdicated on February 24, 1848, and fled the country. He initially sought refuge in Belgium, but eventually made his way to England, where he hoped to live out the remainder of his days in peace. The lithograph offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in European history. The King, who had once ruled over a vast empire, is shown here as a humble traveler, blending in with the crowds and trying to avoid detection. The image underscores the dramatic and unexpected turn of events that marked the end of the Bourbon monarchy in France and the beginning of a new era. Despite the anonymity of the artist, this lithograph remains an important historical document, capturing the essence of a moment that resonated deeply with the people of Europe and beyond. It serves as a reminder of the complex and often unpredictable nature of politics and the enduring power of monarchy, even in the face of revolution and exile.
