EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, showcases the historic Sydenham Fire Station located on Crystal Palace Parade in Sydenham, London. The fire station, a proud creation of the Metropolitan Board of Works (MBW), was opened in 1869, making it one of the oldest fire stations in the London Fire Brigade (LFB) system. The MBW, the forerunner of the London County Council, constructed this Edwardian-era building as part of their commitment to ensuring public safety and fire protection in the rapidly growing city. The striking image features the fire station's red brick facade, adorned with ornate ironwork and the distinctive LFB logo. The station's large bay doors are open, revealing a motorised fire engine, ready for action. The iconic Crystal Palace, originally built by Sir Joseph Paxton for the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, can be seen in the background, relocated to Penge Common, Sydenham Hill, and the area taking on a new name -- Crystal Palace. The Palace, an impressive iron and glass structure, stands majestically against the London skyline, adding to the historic charm of this scene. The Sydenham Fire Station served the community for nearly five decades before its closure in 1915. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into London's firefighting history, showcasing the dedication and innovation of the Metropolitan Board of Works and the London Fire Brigade in protecting the city and its residents.
