King George V himself laid the ship's keel in 1910, marking the beginning of her construction at the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland. The "Sussex" was a steam-powered vessel, measuring 512 feet in length and capable of carrying up to 1,000 beds for wounded soldiers. She was equipped with the latest medical facilities, including an operating theatre, X-ray room, and laboratory, making her a vital asset to the navy's medical services. The "Sussex" saw active service during World War I, transporting wounded soldiers from the battlefields of Europe to hospitals in England. She was also used to evacuate civilians from areas under attack, demonstrating her versatility and humanitarian role.
