Jonathan the High Priest, as depicted in this 17th century print from the Bible, represents a pivotal figure in the Maccabean Revolt as recorded in the Old Testament book of 1 Maccabees. The image captures the solemnity and wisdom of Jonathan, who assumed the role of high priest during a tumultuous time in Jewish history. In 167 BCE, the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes issued decrees to Hellenize the Jewish people, desecrating the Second Temple and forbidding the practice of the Jewish faith. Mattathias the High Priest and his five sons, led by Judas Maccabeus, rose up against the Seleucid army, launching a successful rebellion that lasted for over three years. During this time, Jonathan, the third son of Mattathias, emerged as a crucial leader. He led the Jewish forces in battle and negotiated with the Roman Senate for support against Antiochus IV. In 160 BCE, following the death of his father, Jonathan was appointed high priest and ruler of Judea. He continued to lead the Jewish people, maintaining their independence from the Seleucids for over a decade. This print, created around 1690, showcases the reverence and dignity of Jonathan as he dons the priestly garments and holds the sacred scrolls. The intricate details of his attire and the ornate background evoke a sense of awe and respect for the historical figure.
