EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking silhouette image from 1828, we find two prominent English figures, John Keate and Joseph Goodall, deep in conversation. John Keate (1773-1852), dressed in the traditional academic gown and mortarboard hat of a headmaster, stands on the left side of the photograph. He was a highly respected and influential figure at Eton College, having served as its headmaster from 1809 to 1832. Keate's tenure at Eton was marked by his strict discipline and rigorous academic standards, which earned him both admiration and criticism. On the right side of the photograph, we see Joseph Goodall (1760-1840), the Provost of Eton College, wearing a tall, pointed hat and a long robe. Goodall was an English clergyman who had a long and distinguished career in the Church of England. He served as the Provost of Eton from 1813 until his death in 1840. In this role, he worked closely with Keate to ensure the smooth running of the college and the spiritual wellbeing of its students. The photograph captures the two men in a moment of quiet reflection, perhaps discussing the affairs of the college or the education of its students. The use of silhouettes against a plain background emphasizes the formal nature of the scene and the seriousness of the conversation between the two men. This image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the lives of two influential figures in English education during the early 19th century.
