EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, in the later years of his life. The image, produced in 1880, shows Polk wearing a high collar, a common fashion choice during the mid-19th century. Polk served as President from 1845 to 1849, a period marked by significant expansion of the United States territory. Born on November 2, 1795, in Pineville, North Carolina, Polk grew up in a large farming family. He attended the University of North Carolina and later studied law in Tennessee. Polk's political career began in earnest in 1823 when he was elected to the Tennessee State Senate. He went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1825 to 1839 and in the U.S. Senate from 1839 to 1841. Polk's presidency was marked by several major accomplishments. He led the United States in the Mexican-American War, which resulted in the acquisition of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Polk also signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war and established the boundary between the United States and Mexico. Despite his achievements, Polk's presidency was not without controversy. His handling of Native American affairs, particularly the removal of the Cherokee Nation from their ancestral lands, remains a contentious issue. Polk died on June 15, 1849, just months after leaving office, due to exhaustion from his rigorous campaigning for the expansion of the United States. This portrait, taken in the late 19th century, serves as a reminder of Polk's significant role in American history and the complex legacy he left behind.
