EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella I of Castile (1451-1504), also known as Isabella the Catholic, was a remarkable monarch who ruled the Kingdoms of Castile and León in Spain during the latter part of the 15th century. This engraving, created by Arturo Carretero in 1886 for The Spanish and American Illustration, offers a vivid and colorful portrayal of Isabella in her regal attire. Born in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Isabella ascended to the throne at the age of twenty-one following the death of her mother, Isabella of Portugal. Her reign, which lasted for over thirty-five years, is considered a golden age in Spanish history. Isabella is best known for her role in the unification of Spain under a single crown, her sponsorship of Christopher Columbus's voyages to the New World, and her steadfast defense of the Catholic faith. In this engraving, Isabella is depicted wearing the traditional clothing of the Spanish monarchy. She is shown wearing a long, flowing gown adorned with intricate patterns and a richly embroidered mantle. The queen's elaborate headdress, which features a jeweled crown and a veil, signifies her royal status. The necklace she wears, adorned with pearls and other precious gems, further emphasizes her wealth and power. Isabella's face, with its strong jawline and determined expression, conveys a sense of strength and resilience. Her piercing gaze and regal posture exude confidence and authority. The engraving's vibrant colors and intricate details bring the queen to life, offering a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Spanish court during the Middle Ages.
