The Imperial Wedding in China: A Grand Spectacle in the Far East as Depicted in the Illustrated London News, 1872 On the 16th of October, 1872, in the heart of the Far East, an imperial wedding of great significance took place in China. The young Emperor Tongzhi (1856-1875), the 13th Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, was set to marry his chosen bride, Empress Dowager Cixi, who was also the Emperor's cousin and the Regent of China at the time. The wedding was an extravagant affair, filled with grandeur and tradition, and was widely reported in the international press. The Illustrated London News, a leading British newspaper at the time, published an extensive article and accompanying illustrations on the imperial wedding on the 28th of December, 1872. The article described the elaborate preparations for the wedding, including the construction of a new palace for the bride, the selection of the bridal attire, and the various rituals and ceremonies that took place during the wedding. The photographic print, taken from the Illustrated London News, depicts the imperial procession making its way through the streets of Beijing on the day of the wedding.
