EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, HRH The Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur William Patrick Albert, bids farewell to Omdurman, Sudan as he rides through the South Gate on horseback. The Duke, who served as the Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916, had traveled to Sudan to represent King George V at the Durbar of Omdurman in 1913, marking the formal annexation of the Sudan by the British Empire. The image, captured circa 1915, shows the Duke in military attire, clad in a red uniform with gold braid and a white helmet adorned with a plume. He is surrounded by a group of officers, all dressed in similar uniforms, who salute him as he departs. The South Gate, an impressive archway with intricate carvings, serves as the backdrop to this historic moment. The First World War was in full swing during this time, and although Sudan was not directly involved in the conflict, the British presence in the region was significant due to its strategic importance. The Duke's departure from Omdurman marks the end of his tenure as the representative of the British monarchy in the region and the beginning of a new chapter in his life. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of the British Empire's presence in Africa during the early 20th century. The Duke's regal bearing and the grandeur of the South Gate serve as a reminder of the grandeur and power of the British monarchy during this period. The image also highlights the military might and organization of the British forces, which played a crucial role in the expansion of the British Empire across the globe.
