EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Marlborough: A Grand Departure of the First Lord of the Admiralty This evocative photograph captures the moment of departure for HMS Marlborough from a British port in 1923, following a successful inspection of the troops by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Leo Amery. HMS Marlborough was an Iron Duke-class battleship of the formidable British Royal Navy, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, she entered service just prior to the First World War. Post-war, HMS Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet, where she played a pivotal role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). She also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. The Iron Duke-class battleship was a symbol of British naval power and a testament to the country's commitment to maintaining peace and order in the Mediterranean region during the tumultuous 1920s. In this image, senior naval officers are lined up on the deck, saluting as the First Lord of the Admiralty, Leo Amery, takes his leave. The formal ceremony marks the conclusion of the inspection and the readiness of the ship for its next mission. The departure of HMS Marlborough under the command of its crew signified the continued strength and presence of the British Royal Navy on the global stage.
