EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Madame Thorel after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases two remarkable parrot species: the Green Parrot (Psittacus viridis) and the extinct Mascarene Parrot (Mascarinus mascarinus). The Green Parrot, native to Central and South America, is a vibrant and lively bird, characterized by its emerald-green plumage and distinctive red beak and tail tip. In stark contrast, the Mascarene Parrot, native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, was a tragic loss to the avian world. This beautiful parrot, also known as the Pink Pigeon of Mauritius, was last sighted in the wild in the late 1830s and was officially declared extinct in 1844. The Mascarene Parrot is depicted in this engraving with a pinkish-tinged plumage, a testament to its unique and distinctive appearance. This exquisite work of art is taken from the "Oeuvres Completes de Buffon," a comprehensive natural history encyclopedia published in Paris in 1839 by the renowned French naturalist, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The encyclopedia, which includes detailed illustrations and descriptions of various plants, animals, and minerals, was a groundbreaking work in the field of ornithology and natural history. The intricately detailed handcoloring of this engraving brings the two parrots to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and uniqueness. This historical art piece serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the tragic consequences of extinction.
