EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the skeletal remains of a Black Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) take center stage in the Mammal and Whale Gallery (number 24) at the Natural History Museum in London. The Black Right Whale, a member of the baleen whale family (Mysticeti), is a large, placental mammal and the smallest of the right whales. This majestic creature, also known as the Northern Right Whale or the Right Baleen Whale, is easily identified by its distinctive callosities, or rough patches, on its head, which are unique to each individual. The Black Right Whale was once a common sight in the North Atlantic Ocean, but due to commercial whaling, pollution, and entanglement in fishing gear, its population has dwindled to just over 400 individuals. This skeleton serves as a poignant reminder of the history of whaling and the importance of conservation efforts to protect this endangered species. The anatomy of the Black Right Whale is fascinating. It is a baleen whale, meaning it filters water through its baleen plates to feed on krill and other small organisms. The mouth of a Right Whale is enormous, measuring up to 5 meters (16 feet) wide. The baleen plates, which can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) long, are made of keratin, the same material as human nails. This skeleton, with its intricate details and impressive size, invites visitors to explore the natural history of this magnificent creature. The Mammal and Whale Gallery at the Natural History Museum provides a unique opportunity to learn about the anatomy, behavior, and conservation of various whale species, including the Black Right Whale. By studying the skeleton, scientists can gain valuable insights into the whale's evolution, physiology, and ecology, contributing to our understanding of these fascinating animals and their role in the marine ecosystem.
