EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Elizabeth, Marchioness of Exeter, in the prime of her life during the Regency era. Born Elizabeth Burrell, she first married Douglas, the Eighth Duke of Hamilton, in an extravagant ceremony held at Holkham Hall in Norfolk, England, in 1806. Their union was brief, however, as the Duke was implicated in the notorious "Duke of Hamilton's Riot" in Edinburgh in 1807, which resulted in his exile from Britain. Elizabeth was left a widow at a young age. In 1812, Elizabeth married again, this time to Henry Cecil, who was created Marquess of Exeter in 1831. The couple's marriage was much happier than her first, and they had five children together. In this portrait, Elizabeth is depicted in elegant Regency dress, with a demure expression and a hint of a smile. Her dark hair is styled in intricate curls, and her piercing eyes are framed by long lashes. The background is simple, with a plain, dark fabric providing a subtle contrast to Elizabeth's bright attire. Tragically, Elizabeth's second husband, Henry, died in 1837, leaving her a widow once again. She continued to live at their estate, Burley on the Hill in Leicestershire, until her own death in 1866. This portrait, taken during her second marriage, serves as a poignant reminder of Elizabeth's life as a Marchioness of Exeter, a woman of beauty, grace, and resilience in the face of adversity.
