EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England before the Norman Conquest in 1066. Edward is shown here in regal attire, wearing the royal crest on his helmet and holding a scepter in one hand and a cross in the other. The intricately designed border of the print is adorned with decorative arches, columns, and foliage, adding to the grandeur and majesty of the image. Edward the Confessor, born in 1004, was the son of King Ethelred II and Emma of Normandy. He spent many years in exile in Normandy during his father's reign due to Danish invasions, but upon his father's death in 1016, he was brought back to England and placed on the throne. Edward is known for his piety and devotion to the church, earning him the title of 'Confessor.' He is also credited with rebuilding Westminster Abbey and establishing the Benedictine monastic reform. Despite his peaceful reign, Edward faced numerous challenges, including Viking invasions and internal strife. He died on January 5, 1066, and was succeeded by Harold Godwinson, who would go on to lose the Battle of Hastings to William the Conqueror later that year. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and turbulent political landscape of 11th-century England and the reign of a king who would be remembered for his faith and devotion.
