EDITORS COMMENTS
Oil Be Damned!" - Kilgore, Texas, USA, Circa 1940: This evocative photograph captures the unique blend of faith and industry that once defined the small East Texas town of Kilgore. The scene before us shows drilling rigs towering over a churchyard, their metallic structures casting long shadows on the hallowed ground. The juxtaposition of these modern oil extraction machines with the sacred space of the churchyard is both surprising and thought-provoking. At the height of the oil boom in the late 1930s and 1940s, Kilgore became known as the "City of Seven Sisters" due to the abundance of oil wells in the area. The town's prosperity was built on the back of the oil industry, and it seemed that drilling rigs could be found everywhere, even in the most unexpected places. The people of Kilgore, many of whom were devout Christians, were faced with a difficult decision. Should they turn their backs on the industry that was bringing them wealth and prosperity, or should they embrace it and find a way to coexist with it? Some chose to do the latter, and so drilling rigs were erected in churchyards, parks, and even in the middle of Main Street. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a time when the relationship between faith and industry was more complex than it is today. It also serves as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the people of Kilgore, who found a way to make oil and faith coexist in their community. Taken circa 1940, this image offers a glimpse into a unique moment in American history, one that speaks to the ingenuity, determination, and faith of the people of Kilgore, Texas.
