EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of the horse racing world at the turn of the 20th century, with Diamond Jubilee, a champion Thoroughbred racehorse, taking center stage. Owned by the Prince of Wales, who would later become King George V, Diamond Jubilee is seen here in the company of one of his grooms, in a moment of quiet reflection before a race. Born in 1897, Diamond Jubilee was a chestnut stallion sired by the influential sire, Hyperion, and out of the mare, Belle Tout. Trained by the renowned trainer, Tom Davies, Diamond Jubilee quickly established himself as a formidable competitor on the racecourse, winning the prestigious 2,000 Guineas Stakes and the Epsom Derby in 1900. His victories earned him the title of the Triple Crown champion, a feat that would not be repeated until 1970. The photograph captures the horse in his prime, with a sleek, muscular build and a regal bearing that belied his power and speed. The groom, dressed in traditional racing attire, stands beside him, his hand gently stroking the horse's mane, a testament to the deep bond that existed between horse and human. The scene is set against the backdrop of the late Victorian era, with the elegant curves of the horsebox and the simple yet functional tack and equipment, all contributing to the sense of history and tradition that surrounds the sport of horseracing. The photograph is a reminder of a bygone era, when horses were the undisputed kings of the racecourse, and the connection between horse and rider was a sacred bond that transcended the thrill of competition.
