EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Christian II of Denmark, also known as Christian the Tyrant or Christian the Old, who ruled as King of Denmark and Norway from 1513 to 1523. Born on July 3, 1481, Christian was the eldest son of King John I of Denmark and his second wife, Isabella of Austria. Christian's reign was marked by political instability and conflict. He was crowned King of Denmark in 1513, but his rule was challenged by the nobility and the people of Denmark, who resented his authoritarian rule and high taxes. In 1517, Christian was forced to flee Denmark and seek refuge in Sweden. He returned in 1519, however, with the help of the Swedes and the German mercenary army, the Landsknechts, and regained his throne. During his second reign, Christian implemented a series of reforms aimed at strengthening his power and centralizing the Danish state. He established a new council, the High Council of the Realm, which was composed of the leading nobles and clergy. He also introduced a new coinage system and established a standing army. Despite these efforts, Christian's rule remained unpopular, and in 1520, a rebellion broke out in Denmark. Christian was captured and imprisoned, and in 1523, he was deposed and succeeded by his cousin, Frederick I. Christian was later released from prison and went into exile in Sweden, where he died on August 25, 1559. This portrait of Christian II shows him wearing a fur-trimmed collar, a symbol of royal power and wealth. The image underscores the complex and turbulent history of Denmark during the early modern period, a time of political upheaval and power struggles among the European monarchies.
