EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the essence of Geoffrey Chaucer, the renowned English poet and author, in the later stages of his life as he prepares to deliver a sermon as a priest, around the year 1387. Chaucer, dressed in the robes of a Nun's Priest, is depicted on horseback, with a serious expression and a book in hand, ready to impart wisdom and knowledge to his congregation. The backdrop of Canterbury Cathedral, a significant pilgrimage site and the possible location of Chaucer's famous "Canterbury Tales," adds to the historical significance of the scene. Chaucer, who is considered the father of English literature, had been appointed to the position of Clerk of the King's Works and Clerk of the King's Wardrobe under King Richard II in 1385. He was also a member of the Carthusian Order and held the position of Nun's Priest at the Priory of the Order of the Holy Ghost in London. This image, therefore, represents Chaucer's dual roles as a poet and a priest. The "Canterbury Tales," a collection of stories told by a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury Cathedral, was published in several versions between 1387 and 1400. This work is considered Chaucer's magnum opus and is renowned for its vivid characters, witty dialogue, and exploration of the human condition. The tales are also notable for their influence on later literature, including the works of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. This print, with its intricate details and historical significance, offers a glimpse into the life of one of England's greatest literary figures and the era in which he lived. The image serves as a reminder of Chaucer's enduring legacy and his contributions to the English language and literature.
