EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Charon, the mythological ferryman of the River Styx, as he steadfastly rows his boat in the underworld. In Greek mythology, Charon was tasked with ferrying the souls of the deceased across the river Styx to the land of the dead. He was rarely seen to carry the living across the river, making this moment a significant one. The foreground of the print is dominated by the fearsome watchdog Cerberus, a three-headed hound who guarded the entrance to the underworld. Cerberus was known for his immense size and terrifying appearance, with serpents and flames emanating from his body. His presence served as a reminder of the finality of death and the need for Charon's services. Charon's boat, with its distinctive rowing oars and lantern, is visible in the background, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere of the scene. The use of chiaroscuro, or strong contrasts between light and dark, enhances the sense of mystery and drama, while the muted colors and intricate details of the print evoke a sense of timelessness and history. This image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich and complex mythology of ancient Greece, where the realms of the living and the dead were believed to be interconnected, and where the passage from one to the other was both a journey and a rite of passage. The fierce and unforgiving Cerberus, the steadfast and unyielding Charon, and the mysterious and eternal underworld all come to life in this print.
