EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty of the ancient ruins of Carthage in Tunisia, as they appeared in the late 19th century. The image focuses on the remains of the Dugga necropolis and the Punic Mausoleum, two of the most significant archaeological sites in this historic city. Carthage, once a powerful Phoenician city-state and a major rival of ancient Rome, was founded around 814 BC and flourished for over 800 years. However, its glory was brought to an end in 146 BC when the Romans, under the command of Scipio Africanus, destroyed the city during the Third Punic War. The ruins of Carthage have long been a source of fascination for historians, archaeologists, and travelers alike. This photograph, taken in 1860, provides a glimpse into the past, revealing the remnants of a civilization that once dominated the Mediterranean world. The Dugga necropolis, located to the west of the modern city of Tunis, is believed to date back to the 5th century BC. It contains a number of impressive tombs, including the famous "Tombe des Deux Caryatides," which features two columns in the shape of female figures. The Punic Mausoleum, located to the east of the city, is one of the most impressive structures in the necropolis. Built around 230 BC, it is a magnificent example of Punic architecture, with its distinctive cornice and intricately carved decorative elements. The mausoleum is believed to have been the final resting place of Hannibal, the famous Carthaginian military commander and statesman. Today, the ruins of Carthage are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the world who come to explore the rich history and culture of this ancient city. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Carthage and the importance of preserving our historical heritage for future generations.
