EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the roll-out ceremony of the North American XB-70A Valkyrie, an experimental supersonic nuclear-capable strategic bomber developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) at Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, on May 11, 1964. The XB-70A was part of the SAC's Project Skybolt, which aimed to create a fleet of long-range, high-speed bombers capable of delivering nuclear weapons to targets deep within the Soviet Union. The XB-70A was a remarkable engineering feat, with a sleek, delta-winged design and a maximum speed of over Mach 3. The bomber was 185 feet long and had a wingspan of 102 feet. It was powered by six Pratt & Whitney J58 engines, which were the world's largest turbojet engines at the time. Despite the impressive design and capabilities, the XB-70A project was ultimately cancelled in 1968 due to cost overruns and changing military priorities. Only two XB-70As were built, and both were used primarily for research and testing. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in aviation history, as the XB-70A was rolled out of the hangar for the first time, marking the beginning of its test flights and the pursuit of supersonic bomber technology. The image is a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the engineers and military personnel involved in the project, and serves as a reminder of the technological advancements that have shaped the modern military landscape.
