EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), a renowned British naval officer of the 18th century. Keppel's military career spanned over four decades, during which he played a pivotal role in several significant naval battles. The image, published by Lond Mag, showcases Keppel in an oval format, dressed in a lacy shirt and adorned with the insignia of his high rank. The background is adorned with a richly textured fabric, adding an air of elegance and sophistication to the composition. Augustus Keppel was born into a noble family and entered the Royal Navy at a young age. He rose through the ranks with remarkable speed and was knighted in 1757 for his role in the Battle of Quiberon Bay. Keppel's most famous victory came in 1759 during the Battle of Lagos, where he led a fleet of British and Portuguese ships against the French. His successful command of the British forces earned him the moniker "Lord Howe's Right Hand," as he worked closely with Admiral Edward Howe. Despite his military successes, Keppel's career was not without controversy. In 1781, he was court-martialed for his role in the failed invasion of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The incident did not tarnish his reputation irreparably, and he continued to serve in the navy until his retirement in 1784. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable naval officer, whose military prowess and leadership skills left an indelible mark on British naval history.
