EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the noble visage of Artur III de Bretagne, Count of Richemont (1393-1458), a prominent French nobleman of the late Middle Ages. Artur was born into the House of Montfort, a cadet branch of the powerful House of Dreux, and rose to prominence during the Hundred Years War between England and France. Artur's military prowess was evident from an early age. He served under Jean II, Duke of Brittany, and distinguished himself in several battles against the English. In 1420, he was appointed Constable of Brittany, a position he held until his death. In 1422, Artur played a crucial role in the Battle of Verneuil, where the French forces were decisively defeated by the English. Despite this setback, Artur continued to serve his king, Louis XI, and was rewarded with the title of Count of Richemont in 1442. Artur was also a generous patron of the arts and letters. He founded the Abbey of Sainte-Croix in Quimper, which became a center of learning and culture in Brittany. He was also a close friend and supporter of the French poet Francois Villon. Despite his many accomplishments, Artur's life was not without tragedy. In 1450, his only son and heir, Pierre, was killed in battle. Artur himself died in 1458, leaving his duchy to his niece, Anne de Beaujeu. This hauntingly beautiful portrait of Artur III de Bretagne, Count of Richemont, captures the intensity and resilience of a man who lived through tumultuous times and left an indelible mark on French history.
