EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the enigmatic figure of Johann Arndt (1555-1621), a prominent German Lutheran divine and author, known for his seminal work "True Christianity." Arndt was born in the small town of Schönborn in the Duchy of Württemberg, and studied theology at the University of Tübingen. He became a pastor in the Lutheran Church and served various parishes throughout Württemberg and Saxony. Arndt's most famous work, "True Christianity," was published in 1605 and quickly gained widespread popularity. The book was a response to the growing pietistic movement within Lutheranism, which emphasized personal devotion and the inner experience of faith. Arndt argued for a more balanced approach to Christianity, emphasizing both faith and good works, and the importance of living a holy life. Despite his orthodox Lutheran beliefs, Arndt was accused of being too sympathetic to the Roman Catholic Church and was placed under house arrest by the Elector of Saxony in 1610. He was eventually released in 1613, but his health had deteriorated, and he died in 1621. This photograph print captures the intellectual and spiritual depth of Arndt's character, with his piercing gaze and serious expression. The image serves as a reminder of Arndt's enduring legacy as a theologian and author, whose writings continue to inspire and challenge Christians to this day.
