EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite antique print depicts Saint Antony of Padua, a renowned Portuguese theologian and Franciscan friar, who lived from 1195 to 1231. Saint Antony is celebrated for his profound spiritual insights and eloquent preaching, which drew vast crowds during his lifetime. He is also known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Antony joined the Augustinian Canons Regular as a young man but later felt called to the Franciscan Order. He was ordained a priest in 1220 and was soon recognized for his extraordinary gift of speaking in tongues and his ability to perform miracles. In 1221, he was sent to preach in Italy, where he gained a massive following and became known as the 'Apostle of the Italians.' In 1227, Antony was appointed Bishop of Padua, where he continued his missionary work and founded a monastery. He died on June 13, 1231, and was canonized just one year later by Pope Gregory IX in 1232. This stunning print, produced in the 19th century, showcases the revered saint in his bishop's robes, with a golden nimbus above his head and an ornate border adorning the edges. The intricate details of the print, from the folds of his robes to the delicate patterns on the border, transport us back in time to the medieval era. The image of Saint Antony of Padua serves as a powerful reminder of his enduring legacy as a spiritual leader and a beacon of faith for countless generations.
