EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of triumph and camaraderie between tennis greats Anthony Wilding of New Zealand and Norman Brookes of Australia during their victory in the 1914 Davis Cup match at Forest Hills, Long Island, New York. Wilding, a four-time Wimbledon champion, was playing in his last ever competitive match before answering the call to duty in the First World War. He was part of the Australasian team that triumphed over the United States, with Brookes having defeated Wilding in the Wimbledon final that same year. Tragically, Wilding's tennis career was cut short as he was killed in action at the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the intersection of sporting achievement and the harsh realities of war, encapsulating the historical significance of both the Davis Cup and the First World War.
