Concrete batching plant JLP01_10_02897

STEEL WORKS, REDCAR AND CLEVELAND. A concrete batching plant with several cement storage silos during construction work at the British Steel Works at Redcar.
Laing was only one of a host of contractors that built the works at Redcar, responsible primarily for the construction of the raw material reception and storage areas including a network of tunnels housing conveyor belts, all from concrete. Laing was responsible for the foundations for the heavy plant across the site, the blast furnace itself alone required foundations of 6, 000 cubic meters of concrete consisting of 80% ground blast furnace slag to better resist the high temperatures it would be subjected to

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the construction of a concrete batching plant at the British Steel Works in Redcar, Cleveland. The image showcases several cement storage silos amidst ongoing construction work. During this period, numerous contractors were involved in building the works at Redcar, with Laing being one of them. Their primary responsibility was constructing the raw material reception and storage areas, which included an intricate network of tunnels housing conveyor belts – all made from durable concrete. Laing's contribution extended beyond that as well. They undertook the crucial task of laying foundations for heavy machinery across the site. Notably, they constructed foundations for the blast furnace itself using an impressive 6,000 cubic meters of concrete. To enhance its resistance to extreme temperatures, 80% ground blast furnace slag was incorporated into this massive foundation project. The photograph provides a glimpse into the industrial prowess and meticulous planning required to construct such a monumental steelworks facility in the 1970s. The vibrant yellow hues seen throughout signify both progress and ambition. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering excellence during an era when Britain's steel industry thrived. It stands as a reminder of our nation's industrial heritage and pays homage to those who dedicated their skills towards shaping our built environment for generations to come.
