EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite oil on canvas painting from 1887, renowned artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema captures a poignant moment of charity and compassion in ancient Greece. 'The Women Of Amphissa' depicts the followers of Bacchus, the god of wine, awakening in the marketplace of Amphissa after a night of ritual dancing. As recorded by Greek historian Plutarch, these bacchantes have wandered from their home in Phocis during times of war between Amphissa and Phocis. Yet, instead of hostility or fear, they are met with kindness and generosity by the women of Amphissa who offer them nourishment and protection.
This powerful scene serves as a lesson in charity for Alma-Tadema's Victorian audience, reminding us that even in tumultuous times, acts of compassion can bring people together. The artist's masterful use of color and light brings this ancient moment to life, inviting the viewer to step into the vibrant marketplace of Amphissa and experience the warmth and hospitality of these women as they welcome strangers into their midst.
