The Terminal, 1893 (printed 1911). Creator: Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864-1946)

The Terminal, 1893 (printed 1911). Never modest, Stieglitz declared this work to be a milestone, ushering in a " new era of photography, of seeing." The subject is a mundane, gritty scene of a streetcar driver watering his horses at the end of the line. Stieglitz rejected hard, mechanical detail, instead employing snow, steam, and the frozen breath of the horses to create atmosphere. Wandering lower Manhattan in the aftermath of a blizzard, he captured not only a document of the rapidly changing modern city, but also a record of his own emotions manifested in the world around him. A leader of the Pictorialist movement, Stieglitz organized major exhibitions and published the journal Camera Work from 1903 to 1917

The Terminal, 1893 (printed 1911) - A Milestone in Photography

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Alfred Stieglitz, titled "The Terminal" we are transported back to the bustling streets of lower Manhattan in the late 19th century. Stieglitz, never one to shy away from self-praise, boldly declared this work as a milestone that would revolutionize the way we perceive photography. At first glance, the subject may seem ordinary—a streetcar driver tending to his horses at the end of their line. However, Stieglitz's genius lies in his ability to transcend mere documentation and infuse emotion into every detail. Rejecting mechanical precision, he instead employs snowflakes dancing through the air and steam rising from beneath hooves to create an ethereal atmosphere. As we gaze upon this frozen moment in time after a blizzard has swept through the city, we not only witness a rapidly changing metropolis but also glimpse into Stieglitz's own inner world. His emotions manifest themselves within these wintry scenes—perhaps reflecting his awe at witnessing progress clash with tradition or his contemplation of life's transience amidst urban chaos. Stieglitz was not just an exceptional photographer; he was also a leader of the Pictorialist movement. Through major exhibitions and publishing Camera Work journal for over a decade, he championed photography as an art form capable of evoking profound emotions and challenging conventional notions.
