EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Port Jervis and Vicinity, 1874" takes us back to a bygone era in American history. Created by the talented John J. Harley, this image showcases the beauty of Port Jervis and its surrounding areas during the late 19th century. The focal point of the photograph is Mount William, standing majestically in the distance. From this vantage point, one can witness a breathtaking view of an expansive plain dotted with meandering rivers like the Neversink River. The landscape stretches out as far as the eye can see, offering a glimpse into nature's grandeur. Intriguingly, we also catch sight of Roeblings Delaware Aqueduct in this snapshot. Originally built to connect different sections of the Delaware & Hudson Canal for coal transportation purposes, it later served as a bridge for automobiles and pedestrians crossing over the mighty Delaware River. Harley's work was featured in "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant. This book aimed to showcase America's natural wonders through illustrations created by esteemed American artists using both steel and wood mediums. As we delve into this remarkable piece of artistry from yesteryears, we are transported back to a time when technology was simpler but no less awe-inspiring. It serves as a reminder that even amidst progress and change, there will always be timeless beauty waiting to be discovered within our surroundings.
