Porcelain pot, 16th century?, (1881). Creator: Z Pritchard

Porcelain pot, 16th century?, (1881). Etching of a jug mounted on a piece of plate bearing the hall mark of 1585. It is quite possible that the jug may be much older than even the end of the sixteenth century...The porcelain is like the famous blue and white Nankin [ceramics from Nanjing in China]; octagonal in shape. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a porcelain pot from the 16th century, or possibly even older. Created by Z Pritchard in 1881, this etching beautifully captures the intricate details of a jug mounted on a plate bearing the hall mark of 1585. The pot is reminiscent of the renowned blue and white Nankin ceramics from Nanjing, China, featuring an octagonal shape that exudes elegance. The photograph is sourced from "The South Kensington Museum" a book filled with engraved illustrations and descriptions of art pieces housed in the Victoria & Albert Museum (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum) in London. This artifact holds immense historical significance, representing both craftsmanship and cultural exchange between countries. With its spouted design, this porcelain pot was likely used for serving tea during its time. Its decorative nature adds to its allure as it combines metal elements with delicate ceramic workmanship. Despite being captured over four centuries after its creation, this image allows us to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that went into making such exquisite pottery. Z Pritchard's skillful rendering brings out every fine detail of this ancient treasure while preserving its timeless appeal. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back in time to an era where artistry thrived and objects like these were cherished for their beauty and functionality.
