EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Egerton Bohun Psalter-Hours, dating back to 1370. The manuscript was created for the esteemed Bohun family, who held earldoms in Hereford, Essex, and Northampton during the 13th and 14th centuries. The close-up image reveals an initial letter containing four distinct scenes of great significance. The first depicts a man afflicted with palsy being lowered down from a housetop as Jesus heals him—a powerful representation of divine intervention in times of sickness. The second scene portrays Christ summoning Levi (also known as Matthew) to become one of his disciples—an iconic moment capturing the calling of an apostle. The third scene captures another pivotal event: Christ's summoning of twelve apostles—depicted here according to Luke 5:19-27 and Luke 6:13. This particular page is adorned with exquisite lettering and intricate artwork that exemplify the artistic brilliance prevalent during this period. Published in The Connoisseur magazine in 1937, this photograph preserves not only the historical value but also offers insights into religious practices and artistic expressions from both the fourteenth century and twentieth-century perspectives. It serves as a testament to how literature transcends time, allowing us to appreciate its beauty even after several centuries have passed.
