Lion, 1750s. Creator: Giuseppe Baldrighi (Italian, 1723-1803)

Lion, 1750s. Looking upward with eyes gleaming and mouth open, the lion conveys wild elegance. The sketch comprises short brushstrokes, and its most striking detail is the thick and plentiful mane. Undefined planes of black make up the lions longest tresses, but closer to the face, the mane becomes increasingly light. Although the darkest parts of the mane lack precise definition, the chestnut shades of the mane host shadows and highlights that lend a sense of realism. Additionally, varied shades of brown are contrasted by the lighter, creamier shades of white at the lions muzzle. The life-like nature of this sketch is further communicated by the bright, wet patches on the lions nose and mouth. Likewise, a bright glimmer in the lions right eye illustrates its vitality. At the bottom right of the lion, a small signature attributes the painting to Oudry. Although the remainder of the painting has been left unpolished, it probably serves as a valuable study for the completed version that is one of thirteen in a series of animals by the artist

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent lion, captured in the 1750s by the talented Italian artist Giuseppe Baldrighi. The lion's gaze is directed upwards, its eyes gleaming with intensity and its mouth open in a powerful roar. In this sketch, Baldrighi masterfully employs short brushstrokes to create an image that exudes wild elegance. The most striking feature of this artwork is undoubtedly the lion's thick and abundant mane. The mane consists of undefined planes of black, which gradually transition into lighter shades closer to the face. While lacking precise definition in its darkest parts, the chestnut tones of the mane are skillfully highlighted with shadows and highlights that bring about a sense of realism. Contrasting shades of brown are beautifully complemented by creamy white hues at the lion's muzzle, adding depth and dimension to this lifelike depiction. The artist pays meticulous attention to detail, as evidenced by bright wet patches on the lion's nose and mouth that add authenticity to its appearance. A vibrant glimmer shines from the lion's right eye, capturing its vitality and spirit. Attributed to Oudry through a small signature located at the bottom right corner of the painting, it is likely that this sketch served as a valuable study for one among thirteen completed versions in Oudry’s series on animals. Heritage Art/Heritage Images presents this remarkable print as part of their collection – an exquisite piece showcasing both artistic brilliance and nature’s raw beauty.
