Still Life with Pipe and Matches, 1858. Creator: Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (French, 1803-1860)
Still Life with Pipe and Matches, 1858. The artist was a smoker. In this composition the place of honor is given to a pipe made in Austria around the middle of the 19th century. It is made of precious materials--meerschaum, silver, amber, horn or lacquered wood--that are carefully fashioned, all lovingly rendered by the artist. The cord with a tassel (perhaps of horsehair) is not just a decorative element, it is a security measure in case the precious bowl of the pipe becomes detached from the pipe stem. The pipe is surrounded by ordinary smokers accessories--a cigar case, a snuffbox, and a match holder in porcelain--all placed on a Turkish rug. The Latin inscription translates: " Use, not abuse." In 1858 Decamps was 55 years old and not in the best of health. Perhaps a doctor had advised him to reduce his consumption of tobacco

Still Life with Pipe and Matches, 1858 - A Glimpse into the Artist's World
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print of "Still Life with Pipe and Matches". Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps invites us into his personal sanctuary. The French artist, known for his love of tobacco, showcases his prized possession - a meticulously crafted pipe from Austria dating back to the mid-19th century. This exquisite piece is fashioned from precious materials such as meerschaum, silver, amber, horn or lacquered wood. Decamps' attention to detail is evident in every stroke of the brush as he lovingly renders these cherished items. Notably, a cord adorned with a tassel serves not only as decoration but also as a precautionary measure should the delicate bowl detach from its stem. Surrounding the pipe are everyday smoker's essentials - a cigar case, snuffbox, and porcelain match holder - all resting on an inviting Turkish rug. These ordinary objects take on an air of elegance within Decamps' composition. The Latin inscription adorning this still life speaks volumes about Decamps' relationship with tobacco: "Use, not abuse". At 55 years old and battling health issues during its creation in 1858, perhaps Decamps had received advice from a concerned physician urging him to moderate his consumption. Through this remarkable artwork captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images at The Cleveland Museum of Art in France, we gain insight into both the artist's passion for smoking and his meticulous approach to capturing beauty in even the simplest objects.
