John Gilpin is found by the postboy from the Bell Inn, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

John Gilpin is found by the postboy from the Bell Inn, 1878, (c1918). The youth tries to grab hold of Gilpins horses bridle, and frightens it even more. John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" by William Cowper. Created by Randolph Caldecott in 1878, this image depicts the moment when John Gilpin is found by a postboy from the Bell Inn in 18th century England. In the picture, we see a young man desperately trying to grab hold of Gilpin's horse's bridle, but his actions only serve to frighten the already alarmed animal even more. The chaos and panic are evident as Gilpin's horse gallops out of control through the countryside. "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" tells the amusing tale of how Gilpin, a draper on his way to Edmonton, becomes separated from his family after losing control of his horse. Instead of reaching his intended destination, he ends up in Ware, ten miles away. This humorous story has entertained readers for centuries with its witty narrative and relatable characters. Randolph Caldecott skillfully brings this comical scene to life through monochrome imagery that captures both the energy and humor present in Cowper's ballad. This print serves as a visual metaphor for unexpected situations that can throw our lives into disarray while reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously. As an iconic piece of British literature brought vividly to life by Caldecott's artistic interpretation, this print offers viewers a glimpse into both historical England and timeless human experiences.
