Ignatius Von Loyola, (1933). Creator: Unknown
Ignatius Von Loyola, (1933). Portrait of St Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), Spanish soldier and founder of the Jesuits. Inigo Lopez de Loyola founded the Society of Jesus together with 6 others at St Marys Church, Montmartre, Paris, in 1534. The society, which came to be known as the Jesuits, was established with the mission to enter upon hospital and missionary work in Jerusalem, or to go without questioning wherever the pope might direct. The Society of Jesus gained papal approval in 1540, and went on to become a highly organised teaching and missionary society which was at the forefront of the Counter-Reformation. St Ignatius was canonised in 1622. From " Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a portrait of Ignatius Von Loyola, the esteemed founder of the Jesuits and a significant figure in Catholic history. The image, dating back to 1933, captures St Ignatius' dignified presence with an oval-shaped miniature format. St Ignatius of Loyola was originally a Spanish soldier who underwent a profound spiritual transformation. In 1534, he established the Society of Jesus alongside six others at St Mary's Church in Montmartre, Paris. This society later became known as the Jesuits and played a crucial role in hospital work and missionary endeavors worldwide. The portrait exudes an aura of devotion and determination as St Ignatius gazes into the distance. His halo symbolizes his sainthood while emphasizing his deep connection to spirituality. The unknown creator skillfully portrays this influential man who dedicated himself to serving God's will without question. During the Counter-Reformation period, which aimed to counter Protestantism's influence on Catholicism, St Ignatius' Society gained papal approval in 1540. It subsequently evolved into an organized teaching and missionary society that made substantial contributions within religious circles. In 1622, St Ignatius was canonized for his unwavering commitment to faith and service. This photograph preserves his legacy by capturing both his physical appearance and spiritual essence. Taken from "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring cigarette-card portraits spanning four centuries of world history, this print serves as a valuable historical artifact that allows us to reflect upon one man's remarkable journey towards holiness.
