Horse-racing in the reign of Charles II, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Horse-racing in the reign of Charles II, 1844. We here present our readers with what may be termed one of the " curiosities" of Horse-racing, originally considered as a liberal pastime, and practised for pleasure rather than profit, without the idea of reducing it to a system of gambling. About the period we have illustrated, however, " Horse-races were desports of great men, and good in themselves, though many gentlemen by such means galloped quite out of their fortunes...At the latter end of the reign of Charles I. races were held in Hyde- park, and at Newmarket, and the prize changed from that of a bell to a cup. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history when horse-racing was still considered a noble pursuit, enjoyed for the thrill and pleasure it brought rather than as a means of gambling. Dating back to the reign of Charles II in 1844, this image offers us a glimpse into the world of equestrian sports during that era. During this time, horse-races were esteemed pastimes indulged in by great men who found joy and excitement in these events. However, it is worth noting that some gentlemen went so far as to gamble away their entire fortunes through their passion for racing. The setting depicted here is Hyde Park and Newmarket, where races took place amidst an atmosphere of grandeur and prestige. The prize awarded at these races had evolved from being a simple bell to an elegant cup. As we delve into this remarkable engraving from the Illustrated London News archives, we are reminded of how different horse-racing was centuries ago compared to its modern incarnation. This black-and-white image transports us back to a time when horses galloped with grace and elegance while men observed with enthusiasm. Preserved by Heritage Images, this photograph print serves as both an educational tool and a window into our rich sporting heritage. It allows us to appreciate the evolution of horse-racing over time while reminding us that even ancient traditions can hold timeless beauty.
