EDITORS COMMENTS
His Highness Said Pacha, the New Viceroy of Egypt: A Visionary Leader of the 19th Century This image depicts His Highness Mohamed Said Pasha, the Viceroy of Egypt, as he was portrayed in an original sketch published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. Said Pasha visited Britain around two years prior to this publication, and his gracious reception by Queen Victoria left a lasting impression. During his stay, he meticulously inspected our dockyards and other significant public and private works with an intelligent and inquisitive mind. Born in 1817, Said Pasha was a man of many interests. He was well-versed in astronomy and naval science, and his fascination with the mechanical inventions of the age extended to Egypt itself. The country, with its unique position and abundant resources, held great potential for prosperity, as historic records attest. Said Pasha's rule, which began in 1854, was marked by his dedication to modernizing Egypt. He implemented various reforms, focusing on education, infrastructure, and economic development. The country's rich cultural heritage, including its ancient monuments and vibrant arts scene, flourished under his patronage. In this photograph, Said Pasha is depicted wearing traditional Egyptian attire, complete with a fur-trimmed robe and a distinctive turban. His piercing gaze and well-groomed beard convey an air of wisdom and determination. As the Viceroy of Egypt, he was a symbol of the Ottoman Empire's continued influence in the region, while also embracing the modernity of the 19th century. This portrait, published in the Illustrated London News, reflects the admiration and fascination the British public held for this visionary leader. Egypt, under Said Pasha's administration, was poised to attain the prosperity that its natural position and resources so clearly indicated, as well as the prominence it had enjoyed throughout history.
