Carcassonne, France, 1937. Artist: Martin Hurlimann
Carcassonne, France, 1937. The medieval walled city of Carcassonne was the site of a siege in 1209 during the Albigensian Crusade. A stronghold of the Cathar sect, the city fell to the crusaders commanded by Simon de Montfort after its water supply was cut off. During the Hundred Years War Carcassonne was besieged by Edward the Black Prince, who failed to capture the citadel but burned the lower town. By 1849 the walls had fallen into such a state of disrepair that the French government planned their demolition, but such was the public outcry that they were restored instead. Now a World Heritage Site, the fortifications consist of a double ring of ramparts with 53 towers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, captured by artist Martin Hurlimann in 1937, transports us to the enchanting medieval walled city of Carcassonne, France. Steeped in history and rich with tales of conquests and sieges, Carcassonne stands as a testament to the resilience of its people. The image showcases the formidable fortifications that have protected this ancient city for centuries. The double ring of ramparts, adorned with 53 majestic towers, exudes an air of strength and grandeur. These walls have witnessed countless battles throughout their existence. One such siege occurred in 1209 during the Albigensian Crusade when Simon de Montfort led his crusaders against the Cathar sect who sought refuge within Carcassonne's walls. Despite cutting off its water supply, it took immense effort for them to conquer the city. Centuries later, during the Hundred Years War, Edward the Black Prince attempted to capture Carcassonne but only managed to burn down parts of its lower town. However, these setbacks did not deter its inhabitants or diminish their pride in their beloved citadel. In fact, when plans were made in 1849 to demolish the deteriorating walls due to disrepair, public outcry prevailed and restoration efforts began instead. Today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carcassonne continues to captivate visitors from around the world with its stunning architecture and medieval charm. Martin Hurlimann's evocative photograph immortalizes this iconic landmark while paying homage to its turbulent past. It serves as a reminder that even amidst conflict and adversity, beauty can endure through time.
