The Birth and Naming of John the Baptist, 1496-99. Creator: Juan de Flandes (Netherlandish, c
The Birth and Naming of John the Baptist, 1496-99. This painting was once a panel from the important five-panel altarpiece commissioned by Queen Isabella for the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores near Burgos, site of the royal tombs of her parents and brother. The altarpiece, of which the other panels survive, was likely painted during the artists early employment at the royal court. Typical of Flemish art of the period with its love of naturalistic detail and almost photographic depiction of a domestic interior, this scene suggests a comfortable burghers home in 15th-century Ghent or Bruges in which the artist transforms a contemporary setting to frame the story of the birth of John the Baptist. Having just given birth, Elizabeth lies in bed. Nearby, her cousin, the Virgin Mary, presents the newly born child to his elderly father, Zacharias. Having lost his ability to speak when he doubted an angels prophecy of the childs birth, Zacharias writes the chosen name for his son. At this moment, his speech is restored

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Birth and Naming of John the Baptist" painted by Juan de Flandes in 1496-99. Originally part of a five-panel altarpiece commissioned by Queen Isabella for the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores, this particular panel transports us to a domestic interior reminiscent of 15th-century Ghent or Bruges. In this scene, we witness Elizabeth, having just given birth, resting in bed while her cousin Mary presents the newborn child to his elderly father Zacharias. The artist's attention to naturalistic detail and photographic depiction allows us to immerse ourselves in this intimate moment. It is worth noting that Zacharias had lost his ability to speak after doubting an angel's prophecy about his son's birth. However, as he writes down the chosen name for his child at this very moment, his speech is miraculously restored. This painting not only captures a significant biblical event but also reflects the artistic style prevalent during its creation. With its meticulous attention to detail and skillful transformation of contemporary settings into sacred narratives, it exemplifies Flemish art from that period. As we admire this exquisite print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we are transported back in time to witness both the tender familial bonds and divine intervention depicted within "The Birth and Naming of John the Baptist.
