The Cornwall Railway line opened in 1859 and extended to Falmouth in 1863. The route cuts across numerous deep river valleys and in order to reduce expenditure the river crossings took the form of wooden viaducts of timber deck spans supported by fans of timber bracing on masonry piers. Replacement of the timber viaducts by all-masonry structures began in the 1870s.); © Elton Collection, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Penryn, Flushing and Falmouth Harbours (from the Old Helton Road)" offers a glimpse into the picturesque coastal landscape of Cornwall during the late 19th century. The coloured litho on paper captures the essence of this era with its vibrant hues and intricate detailing. The image showcases the convergence of Penryn, Flushing, and Falmouth Harbours, highlighting their significance as bustling maritime hubs. The viewer is transported to a time when these harbors were vital centers for trade and transportation along the Cornish coast. Intriguingly, this artwork also sheds light on an important development in transportation history - the construction of the Cornwall Railway line. Opened in 1859 and extended to Falmouth in 1863, this railway revolutionized connectivity in the region. The wooden viaducts depicted in this print served as river crossings along this railway route before being replaced by sturdier all-masonry structures later on. Amidst this scenic backdrop lies a pastoral scene featuring shepherds tending to their flock of sheep. This juxtaposition between man-made infrastructure and natural beauty adds depth to the composition while symbolizing harmony between human activity and nature's serenity. Overall, this print not only captures a specific moment in time but also provides insight into historical advancements that shaped Cornwall's landscape. It serves as a testament to both artistic skill and cultural heritage preserved by Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust for future generations to appreciate.
