The New Summer Uniform or Tickling the Cossacks, 1854 (colour litho)

5929260 The New Summer Uniform or Tickling the Cossacks, 1854 (colour litho) by Morin, Edward (1824-82); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The New Summer Uniform or Tickling the Cossacks, 1854.
Coloured lithograph by and after Edward Morin (1824-82), No 7 in the series Lloyds Incidents from the War in Crimea. I published by Lloyd Brothers and Co, London, November 1854.
Hearing that the British troops in Bulgaria had been issued with white cloth covers for their shakos as a means of warding off sun-stroke, the artist has imagined what would be the effect of the Guards Regiments being issued with cloth covers for their bearskins. The effect, he has clearly decided, would be risible, and he has depicted the Russians collapsing in fits of laughter at the British uniform. Note also the open-neck shirts, reflecting the success of the campaign in the newspapers to rid the soldiers throat of the uncomfortable leather stock.); © National Army Museum

The New Summer Uniform or Tickling the Cossacks, 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a vibrant and humorous lithograph by Edward Morin that captures a whimsical moment during the Crimean War. In this colourful print, Morin depicts an imaginative scenario where British Guards Regiments are issued with cloth covers for their iconic bearskin hats. The artist's intention was to highlight the absurdity of such a uniform change, resulting in an amusing reaction from the Russian soldiers. The scene portrays a group of Cossacks collapsing into fits of laughter upon seeing the British troops donning these unconventional headpieces. Their amusement is palpable as they point and jest at the comical sight before them. Additionally, Morin includes another detail reflecting contemporary changes in military attire – open-neck shirts replacing uncomfortable leather stocks worn around soldiers' throats. Published as part of Lloyd Brothers and Co's series "Lloyds Incidents from the War in Crimea" this lithograph offers a lighthearted take on an otherwise serious conflict. It showcases Morin's artistic skill in capturing both historical accuracy and comedic elements within his work. This image provides viewers with insight into popular perceptions surrounding military fashion during that era while also reminding us of art's ability to entertain and provoke laughter even amidst times of war.
