The Coast of Asia Minor, c. 1867 (oil on canvas)

2956892 The Coast of Asia Minor, c.1867 (oil on canvas) by Leighton, Frederic (1830-96); 20.32x40.64 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: This oil sketch was painted about 1867 when Leighton visited the Greek island of Rhodes. He made many studies of the coast of Asia Minor, as seen from Rhodes, and remembered it as " that marvellous blue coast across the seas, that looks as if it could enclose nothing behind its crested rocks by the Gardens of the Hesperides" (Ormond, p 96). On the day he painted this, from near Lindos, it was windy, as is evident from the sailing boat scudding across a lively sea. The memory of that day inspired Leighton to paint the first of a group of large pictures of a similar theme, Greek Girls Picking up Pebbles by the Sea of 1871 (Simon Perez Collection), using this sketch as the backdrop. In the finished painting, the wind is blowing the drapery so that it clings to the bodies of the girls as if wet and billows above them like clouds, with the same little sailing boat beyond.); Photo eThe Ms Gallery, London; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Coast of Asia Minor" painted by Frederic Leighton in 1867. Measuring at 20.32x40.64 cm, this oil sketch is a part of a private collection and holds immense historical significance. During his visit to the Greek island of Rhodes, Leighton was inspired by the breathtaking view of the coast of Asia Minor as seen from there. He described it as a "marvellous blue coast across the seas" that appeared to enclose nothing behind its crested rocks near the Gardens of the Hesperides. On the day this painting was created, near Lindos, strong winds were evident as depicted by a sailing boat scudding across lively waves. This particular moment left such an impression on Leighton that he went on to paint a series of large pictures with similar themes. One notable piece influenced by this sketch is "Greek Girls Picking up Pebbles by the Sea" completed in 1871 and now housed in Simon Perez Collection. In this finished painting, billowing drapery clings to the girls' bodies like wet fabric while also resembling clouds above them. The same little sailing boat can be spotted beyond them, further connecting both artworks. This remarkable print allows us to appreciate Leighton's mastery in capturing not only natural landscapes but also conveying emotions through his brushstrokes. It serves as a testament to his ability to immortalize fleeting moments and transport viewers into serene coastal scenes bathed in ethereal hues.
