EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished presence of Union Brigadier General John M. Schofield in late 1861. At just 30 years old, Schofield is portrayed as a newly-promoted officer, exuding confidence and strength. The image was taken by renowned photographer Mathew Brady at his studio in Washington, D. C. Schofield's military career would go on to be illustrious, serving valiantly during the Civil War before becoming Superintendent of West Point and eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant-General in command of the entire U. S. Army. Such was his impact that Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii would later bear his name. The original photograph has been meticulously cleaned and repaired by BiM (Battlefields in Motion), ensuring its preservation for future generations to admire this historical figure. In this restored version, we can appreciate every detail from Schofield's balding head to his well-groomed beard and sideburns. The uniform he wears proudly displays brass buttons and epaulettes, symbols of authority within the United States Military Academy where he trained. This portrait serves as a testament to both Schofield's personal achievements and the sacrifices made during one of America's most tumultuous periods - the American Civil War. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured over a century ago, it reminds us not only of our nation's past but also inspires us with stories of resilience, leadership, and dedication to duty that continue to shape our present-day armed forces.
