This work depicts a patrol from the 17th (Duke of CambridgeAs Own) Lancers discovering the bodies of Lieutenant Teignmouth Melvill and Lieutenant Nevill Josiah Aylmer Coghill, 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, who were both killed attempting to save the Queens Colour of the 1st Battalion at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Last Sleep of the Brave, Isandlwana, Zulu War, 1879" captures a poignant moment in history. Created by Alphonse Marie de Neuville in 1881, this oleograph depicts a patrol from the 17th Lancers discovering the bodies of Lieutenant Teignmouth Melvill and Lieutenant Nevill Josiah Aylmer Coghill. These brave soldiers were killed while attempting to save the Queens Colour of the 1st Battalion at the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22nd, 1879. In this powerful image, we witness not only the aftermath of battle but also acts of courage and sacrifice. The officers' lifeless bodies lie among a rugged terrain as their fellow comrades pay their respects. The flag they fought for still stands tall beside them, symbolizing their unwavering dedication to duty. It is worth noting that although historically inaccurate in terms of timing – as depicted lancers had yet to leave England for South Africa when these bodies were retrieved – Neuville's artwork beautifully captures both the heroism and tragedy that unfolded during this significant conflict. This piece serves as a reminder of gallantry amidst adversity and pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. It stands as a testament to bravery on the battlefield and invites viewers to reflect upon themes such as honor, loyalty, and camaraderie within armed forces throughout history.
