491444 Head of Amenhotep III Wearing the Blue Crown, c.1391-1353 BC (granodiorite)
by Egyptian 18th Dynasty (c.1567-1320 BC); h:39.10 w:30.30 d:27.70 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: During the long, peaceful reign of Amenhotep III, Egypt reached a pinnacle of wealth and splendor. This magnificent portrait captures the rulers exotic features to perfection. He has large, almond-shaped eyes, elegant arched eyebrows, and a full mouth. His face is youthful and without blemish. The bone structure is lost in the fleshy fullness of the face. The contrast between polished and roughened surfaces is a hallmark of hard stone images of Amenhotep III. The flesh areas were smoothed to a glistening sheen, while the eyeballs and the crown were left rougher. The roughening of the crown also had a practical purpose, for the upper portion was originally painted blue and the browband was painted yellow. The paint would have adhered better to the unpolished surface.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Head of Amenhotep III Wearing the Blue Crown, a stunning piece from ancient Egypt's 18th Dynasty. Crafted from granodiorite, this masterpiece dates back to approximately 1391-1353 BC and is currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During Amenhotep III's prosperous reign, Egypt experienced unprecedented wealth and grandeur. This portrait perfectly captures the ruler's exotic features with remarkable precision. His eyes are large and almond-shaped, complemented by elegant arched eyebrows and a full mouth. The youthful face appears flawless, concealing any trace of bone structure beneath its fleshy fullness. One notable aspect of this artwork is the contrast between polished and roughened surfaces—a characteristic commonly found in hard stone depictions of Amenhotep III. While areas representing flesh were meticulously smoothed to achieve a glistening sheen, both eyeballs and crown were left intentionally rougher. This deliberate textural difference served practical purposes as well; the upper portion of the crown was originally painted blue while the browband was adorned with yellow paint that adhered better to unpolished surfaces. The fine art print provided by Bridgeman Images allows viewers to appreciate every intricate detail captured within this extraordinary sculpture—an enduring testament to both ancient Egyptian craftsmanship and Amenhotep III's reign as one of history's most opulent rulers.
