EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Akiba Gongen, a divine manifestation of Mount Akiba in Echigo Province. Revered as a powerful protector against fire, this deity is depicted with intricate details on wood using polychrome and gold accents. The artwork, created by an anonymous Japanese artist in the 17th century, measures 87.6A--41.3A--41.9 cm and is housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA. The Akiba Gongen figure combines elements from various spiritual traditions such as Shintoism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Resembling the fierce Shinto tengu goblins with their long beaks and wings, this deity exudes strength and intensity. Dressed as a Buddhist monk like the Wisdom King FudAc MyAcAc, Akiba Gongen wields a double-edged sword symbolizing power over evil forces and holds a rope to bind negative energies. Drawing inspiration from the Hindu goddess Dakini who rides on a white fox through the sky, Akiba Gongen also possesses similar abilities for transcendence. This amalgamation of diverse influences highlights Japan's syncretic religious practices. The print not only captures the artistic mastery behind this piece but also invites viewers to delve into its rich cultural significance. As we admire this representation of divinity rooted in folklore and mythology, we are reminded of humanity's eternal quest for protection against adversity while embracing spirituality across different belief systems.
