Sir Robert was the Governor-Generals agent in Baluchistan throughout the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880). His negotiations with the tribes along the vital supply lines between India and Kandahar, became particularly important after the Battle of Maiwand in July 1880 and during the British withdrawal.
