EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a remarkable piece of history, showcasing the solar topi worn by Sir Robert Sandeman, an influential figure in the Indian Political Service during the late 19th century. Serving as the Agent to the Governor-General in Baluchistan around 1880, Sir Robert's role became crucial during the Second Afghan War. This distinctive headgear, known as a pith helmet or solar topi, was made from cloth over pith and served as both protection from the scorching sun and a symbol of authority. It became synonymous with colonial officers serving in hot climates. Sir Robert's significance grew after the Battle of Maiwand in July 1880 when he negotiated with tribes along vital supply lines between India and Kandahar. His approach was characterized by strength and resilience. In fact, this very hat bears witness to his bravery – it carries a bullet hole inflicted during an attack by Pathan tribesmen that he personally led an assault against. Despite being shot through his hat, Sir Robert miraculously survived this encounter. This incident only solidified his reputation as a fearless leader who would stop at nothing to protect British interests. Displayed at London's National Army Museum today, this print not only showcases an iconic artifact but also serves as a testament to one man's indomitable spirit amidst challenging circumstances.
